ChatGPT Study Mode: OpenAI Launches New Learning Feature

OpenAI Launches Study Mode for ChatGPT
OpenAI revealed on Tuesday the availability of Study Mode, a novel feature integrated within ChatGPT. This new functionality is designed to foster students’ independent critical thinking abilities, moving beyond simply providing solutions to their inquiries.
When activated, Study Mode will present users with questions to evaluate their comprehension. In certain instances, direct answers will be withheld unless students actively demonstrate engagement with the subject matter.
Availability and Rollout
According to OpenAI, the rollout of Study Mode has begun for logged-in users across all ChatGPT subscription tiers – Free, Plus, Pro, and Team – starting Tuesday.
The company anticipates extending access to its Edu subscribers, primarily comprised of students whose schools have implemented a site-wide subscription plan, in the coming weeks.
Addressing Concerns About Critical Thinking
Study Mode represents OpenAI’s response to the widespread adoption of ChatGPT by students. Research indicates that while ChatGPT can serve as a beneficial tutoring resource, it also carries the potential to negatively impact critical thinking skills.
A study released in June revealed that individuals utilizing ChatGPT for essay writing exhibited reduced brain activity during the process compared to those employing Google Search or no assistance at all.
From Bans to Acceptance
The initial launch of ChatGPT in 2022 prompted concerns among educators, resulting in generative AI prohibitions in numerous American school districts.
However, by 2023, several schools rescinded these bans, and educators generally acknowledged that ChatGPT would become an integral part of students’ learning experiences.
A Shift Towards Learning
With the introduction of Study Mode, OpenAI aims to enhance ChatGPT’s role as a learning instrument, rather than solely a source of answers. Anthropic previously launched a comparable feature, Learning Mode, for its Claude AI chatbot in April.
Limitations and Future Considerations
It’s important to acknowledge the inherent limitations of Study Mode’s effectiveness. Students retain the ability to easily revert to the standard ChatGPT mode if they simply require a direct answer.
OpenAI’s VP of Education, Leah Belsky, clarified in a briefing with TechCrunch that the company is not currently providing tools for parents or administrators to restrict students to using Study Mode.
However, Belsky indicated that exploring administrative or parental controls is a possibility for future development.
Ultimately, utilizing Study Mode effectively will require a genuine commitment to learning from students – a desire to understand, not just complete assignments.
Looking Ahead
OpenAI views Study Mode as an initial step towards improving learning within ChatGPT. The company intends to publish further research regarding student utilization of generative AI in educational settings in the future.
