OpenAI Upgrades ChatGPT with Shopping Features - Latest News

OpenAI Enhances ChatGPT Search for Improved Shopping
OpenAI announced on Monday an update to ChatGPT search, its integrated web search functionality, designed to provide users with a more refined online shopping experience.
New Features for Product Discovery
When users now inquire about products through ChatGPT, the chatbot will present a curated selection of recommendations. These suggestions will be accompanied by relevant images and user reviews.
Direct links to the websites where these products can be purchased will also be included, streamlining the buying process. OpenAI emphasizes the system’s ability to understand highly specific requests phrased in natural language, delivering tailored results.
Initial Focus Areas
The initial rollout of this feature will concentrate on several key categories. These include fashion, beauty, home goods, and electronics.
Availability and Access
This enhanced search capability is being implemented in GPT-4o, the standard AI model powering ChatGPT. It is available starting Monday for users of ChatGPT Pro, Plus, and the free version.
Access is also being extended to users who are not logged in, globally.
Competition with Google
This update to ChatGPT search represents OpenAI’s ongoing efforts to challenge Google in the realm of online search. The goal is to create a more personalized and effective experience for finding both products and information.
The online shopping sector is a crucial component of Google’s business, but the competitive advertising landscape for prominent placement in search results has reportedly impacted the overall quality of those results over time.
Rapid Growth of ChatGPT Search
OpenAI reports significant growth in the usage of its search product. Over a billion web searches were conducted within ChatGPT just last week, according to information shared with TechCrunch.
Transparency and Independence
OpenAI asserts that the shopping results presented within ChatGPT are determined independently. This upgrade does not incorporate advertisements.
The results are based on structured data obtained from third parties, encompassing details like pricing, product descriptions, and customer reviews. OpenAI will not receive any financial compensation from purchases made through the ChatGPT search feature.
Evolving Stance on Advertising
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has historically expressed reservations about incorporating ads into ChatGPT. However, a recent interview revealed a shift in perspective.
Altman indicated a willingness to consider “tasteful” advertising models, such as earning affiliate fees on purchases made through ChatGPT, without offering prioritized placement in search results.
Personalized Recommendations with Memory
OpenAI plans to integrate its memory feature with shopping functionality for Pro and Plus subscribers. This will enable ChatGPT to leverage a user’s past conversations to provide highly personalized product recommendations.
The company had previously implemented memory referencing for broader web searches. However, these memory features will not be accessible to users located in the EU, the U.K., Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.
Additional Enhancements
ChatGPT search will now display trending searches as users begin typing their queries, mirroring Google Search’s autocomplete functionality.
Furthermore, ChatGPT search is now available through WhatsApp, allowing users to access the chatbot for current information via messaging.
Comparison to Operator
OpenAI has previously experimented with shopping features through its AI “agent” platform, Operator. Operator can take several minutes to browse numerous web pages to identify relevant products.
ChatGPT search with shopping offers a much faster and more direct experience, while still supporting natural language queries.
