Peacock Adds Mini-Games & Short Videos - New Features!

Peacock Introduces New Features to Boost Engagement

Facing competition from leading entertainment platforms such as Netflix, TikTok, and YouTube, Peacock is implementing new strategies to attract and retain viewers. These initiatives include the introduction of mini-games and a dedicated feed for short-form vertical videos.

Pilot Program and Rollout

The streaming service announced these experimental features at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Monday. A phased rollout will begin this month, initially targeting iOS and Android applications.

According to a company spokesperson who spoke with TechCrunch, the initial testing will be varied. Some users will experience both the gaming and vertical video options, while others will be presented with only one, or neither.

Subscriber Growth and Competitive Landscape

Peacock’s efforts to innovate come as the platform navigates challenges in expanding its subscriber base. Currently, Peacock has 36 million subscribers.

This figure is considerably lower when compared to Netflix, which boasts 282.72 million subscribers globally, with nearly 85 million located in the U.S. and Canada. Approximately 66.7 million Netflix subscribers are based solely within the United States, significantly exceeding Peacock’s reach.

Expanding into Gaming

Netflix has been actively developing its gaming division since 2021, and now offers over 120 games. Other streaming services, including YouTube and Sling TV, have also begun offering free gaming options to enhance their appeal.

Peacock’s Mini-Game Selection

Peacock is presently testing five distinct mini-games: Daily Sort, Daily Swap, Predictions, What The, and Venn. These games are designed to increase viewer engagement with popular content.

Gameplay within these titles is often linked to Peacock’s TV shows and sports programming. This strategy of connecting games to established intellectual property is intended to draw in players already invested in those franchises.

Game Examples and Functionality

For instance, the Venn game challenges players to categorize items into relevant circles based on a daily theme connected to shows like “Below Deck.” The Predictions game allows users to forecast outcomes for shows and sporting events, providing a return mechanism to check the accuracy of their predictions.

Short-Form Vertical Video Playlists

In addition to gaming, Peacock is also experimenting with curated vertical video playlists. These playlists will feature brief clips sourced from Peacock’s extensive library of TV shows, movies, sports content, and news programs.

Content will be refreshed on a daily and weekly basis, with many clips debuting exclusively within the app. Users can easily navigate to the full show or movie by tapping on the clips.

Responding to Market Trends

With the potential for a TikTok ban and a general trend towards shorter attention spans, Peacock’s vertical video playlists could prove to be a popular feature. This approach mirrors that of Tubi, a free ad-supported streaming service owned by Fox, which recently launched its own short-form video feature called “Scenes.”
