Peloton Sues Rivals Over Patent Infringement | On-Demand Fitness

Peloton Initiates New Legal Action Against iFit and Echelon

Peloton has recently filed new lawsuits against two prominent competitors in the fitness technology sector: iFit and Echelon. The company asserts that both firms are infringing upon a number of patents it possesses. These patents cover technologies related to on-demand fitness classes.

Allegations Against iFit

The lawsuit against iFit specifically targets products from NordicTrack, ProForm, and FreeMotion. Peloton alleges that these products unlawfully utilize its leaderboard technology, as well as features like ActivePulse and SmartAdjust. The company is seeking both financial compensation and a court order to halt sales of the infringing devices until the relevant patents expire.

Peloton contends that iFit previously lacked the capability to deliver live, instructor-led classes or facilitate competitive workouts through a leaderboard. Subscribers were initially limited to following pre-recorded exercise routines without any interactive community features. The filing states that iFit is now “profiting immensely from this infringement.”

It is worth noting that iFit postponed its initial public offering in October, citing unfavorable market conditions.

Claims Against Echelon

The legal action against Echelon encompasses a wide range of its fitness equipment. This includes the Smart Connect EX series bikes, Stride treadmills, Row rowers, and the Echelon Fit app. Peloton argues that prior to its own Tread release, leaderboards were not a standard feature on treadmills.

Peloton claims Echelon has implemented a “copycat leaderboard” with a function allowing users to identify others participating in on-demand classes concurrently. This feature, termed an “‘Online Filter’”, is central to the allegations.

History of Legal Disputes

This is not the first instance of legal conflict between Peloton and these companies. Previous lawsuits have been filed by both Peloton against iFit (formerly Icon Health and Fitness) and vice versa, concerning patent infringements. Furthermore, Peloton initiated a suit against Echelon in 2019, alleging the imitation of the Peloton Bike experience.

Requests for comment have been directed to iFit and Echelon. Engadget will update this story as more information becomes available.
