Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine: 90% Effective in Phase 3 Trial

According to an announcement made on Monday by Pfizer and its collaborator BioNTech, their jointly-created COVID-19 vaccine has demonstrated a 90 percent success rate in preventing infection among those involved in its Phase 3 clinical trial. This assessment stems from information examined by an outside, impartial panel tasked with evaluating the trial’s outcomes. While these are preliminary findings and not the conclusive, validated results, they represent a significantly encouraging step forward in the effort to create a functional and widely accessible vaccine.
The vaccine being developed by Pfizer and BioNTech utilizes mRNA technology, a relatively new approach that numerous organizations investigated for COVID-19 due to its potential benefits in accelerating development and boosting effectiveness. The trial results were determined by an even distribution of 94 verified COVID-19 instances among the study participants – exceeding the minimum requirement of 62 confirmed cases established by the companies and the FDA for a sound, scientifically valid evaluation.
The Phase 3 trial involved 43,358 participants, and Pfizer has stated that “no significant safety issues” have been identified to date, alongside the positive prevention rate. According to this initial data, individuals who receive the vaccine are safeguarded 28 days following the initial dose, and the vaccine requires a two-dose regimen.
Further safety evaluations and ongoing investigations are still necessary, with the companies projecting that a complete two months of safety data – the amount needed by the FDA for Emergency Use Authorization – will be ready during the third week of this month. Study participants will also be observed for a full two years after completing their second and final dose to assess potential long-term impacts. Pfizer currently anticipates being able to manufacture up to 50 million vaccine doses by the close of the current year, and potentially up to 1.3 billion doses throughout 2021.
The complete data from this trial is still awaiting review by other researchers and publication in scientific journals, but this is undoubtedly the most hopeful and definitive positive development to date in vaccine creation. If all proceeds as planned, widespread vaccine distribution could commence before the year’s end.
