PlayVS Acquires GameSeta: Expanding into Canada - PlayVS

PlayVS, the esports organization focused on establishing structured leagues for secondary and post-secondary institutions, has announced its initial acquisition. The company, which has secured over $100 million in funding, is incorporating GameSeta, a Vancouver-based company also dedicated to providing support infrastructure for high school esports programs. The financial details of this transaction have not been revealed.
This acquisition is intended to bolster PlayVS’s growth and enable its entry into the Canadian market. GameSeta’s existing collaboration with BC School Sports, the administrative organization for scholastic athletics in British Columbia, will be transferred to PlayVS as part of the agreement.
PlayVS currently maintains a comparable (and exclusive) partnership with NFHS, the national governing body for high school sports in the United States. The company has also made significant inroads into the collegiate esports scene, introducing a collegiate product through a collaboration between PlayVS and Epic Games. Following the introduction of this collegiate offering, overall player participation has increased by 460 percent. Additionally, the company has established a new scholarship fund totaling $900,000 for both high school and college esports participants.
Established by Delane Parnell in early 2018, PlayVS has experienced substantial growth, forging alliances with both school athletic associations and game publishers. The range of games supported by PlayVS includes titles such as League of Legends, Rocket League, SMITE, Overwatch, Fortnite, FIFA 21, and Madden NFL 21. PlayVS currently serves over 19,000 high schools throughout the United States and has registered more than 230,000 users.
PlayVS functions as a central platform for schools to establish esports teams and engage in competitive play against other schools. While traditional sports like basketball and baseball benefit from well-defined organizational structures and governing bodies for scheduling, playoffs, and officiating, PlayVS aims to fulfill this role within the esports landscape.
Beyond organizing these leagues, PlayVS also provides a valuable resource for colleges and esports organizations, offering a means to scout games and monitor the performance statistics of individual players.
As a result of the acquisition, GameSeta’s Tawanda Masawi and Rana Taj will be joining the PlayVS team and will be responsible for overseeing Canadian operations.
In addition to expanding its geographic reach, PlayVS is also planning to broaden its scope beyond high schools and colleges with the introduction of a product offered directly to consumers.
“We plan to introduce direct-to-consumer products in collaboration with publishers, expanding the PlayVS platform to allow individuals to organize and participate in competitions regardless of their affiliation with a school,” Parnell explained. “We are very enthusiastic about this prospect. The gaming market, in general, has demonstrated a strong demand for gaming as a form of entertainment and content, and players are particularly excited about esports as both a form of entertainment and a competitive outlet. We want to ensure that PlayVS is a leading destination for competitive gaming.”
