Plug Raises $2.7M to Simplify Payments in Brazil

Plug Pagamentos Secures $2.7 Million Seed Funding

Plug Pagamentos (Plug) has recently announced the completion of a $2.7 million seed funding round. The investment was spearheaded by Amy Cheetham, a new partner at Costanoa Ventures.

Additional participants in this funding round encompassed Verve Capital and Norte Ventures, alongside other investors. [Update: QED and Latitud also contributed!]

Addressing Payment Challenges in Brazil

Headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Plug is focused on improving the landscape for online commerce within its domestic market. The startup identifies Brazil as presenting significant hurdles for payment processing.

Specifically, approximately one-quarter of all transactions fail, and merchants encounter payment processing fees that are substantially higher compared to those in other regions.

Plug’s Solution: A Streamlined Payment API

As a graduate of the Y Combinator Summer 2021 program, Plug offers a comprehensive API integrating various payment processors. It also provides a diverse range of payment options to its users.

The core objective of the company is to simplify payments in Brazil, potentially unlocking economic opportunities and fostering growth through its developer-focused platform.

Rapid Growth and Market Traction

According to Plug, its product has been live since April and is experiencing substantial growth. The company reports that both its total payment volume (TPV) and customer base are doubling on a monthly basis.

Funding Details

The latest capital was raised through a SAFE (Simple Agreement for Future Equity) agreement, which included a valuation cap. The specific details of the conversion ceiling remain undisclosed.

Costanoa Ventures’ Investment Rationale

Amy Cheetham revealed that she initially connected with Plug CEO Alex Vilhena in May, prior to the company’s participation in Y Combinator. However, the investment agreement with Costanoa Ventures materialized several months later.

Cheetham had already been exploring the payments orchestration sector, where Plug operates, and the company aligned with her investment thesis despite its focus on a different geographic market than initially anticipated.

Following its graduation from the accelerator program, Plug was positioned to secure additional funding.

Pricing Strategy and Future Goals

Vilhena indicated that the company initially offered a 1% transaction rate to its early adopters. The long-term goal is to reduce this rate to a median of 0.5%.

For larger clients, Plug anticipates the possibility of offering rates as low as 0.2%.

Latin American Fintech Investment Trends

Plug’s funding round is indicative of the broader surge in fintech investment across Latin America. This suggests considerable potential for further development and innovation within the region.

Despite the growing startup market in Latin America, significant obstacles to online commerce persist. The anticipated public offering of Nubank demonstrates the region’s capacity for producing successful companies, and investors believe it will not be an isolated case.
