Polestar Faces Another Challenging Year

Polestar Faces Continued Challenges in 2025 Following a Difficult 2024
The electric vehicle manufacturer, Polestar, a spin-off from Volvo, experienced a challenging 2024. Projections indicate that 2025 may present similar difficulties for the company.
Revenue Shortfall and Price Wars
Polestar announced on Thursday that its revenue for fiscal year 2024 is anticipated to be lower than that of 2023. This revised forecast follows a previous estimate of maintaining consistent sales figures.
The decline is attributed to lower-than-expected sales volumes for the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 models. A global price war within the EV market significantly contributed to this outcome.
Loan Agreement Pressure
Reduced sales have increased pressure from Polestar’s lenders. The automaker secured a $950 million loan from a banking syndicate one year prior.
The original loan agreement stipulated that Polestar would generate over $5.3 billion in revenue during 2024. Current projections indicate this target will not be met.
Financial Restatement and Revenue Amendment
While final 2024 financial results are pending, Polestar anticipates revenue will fall considerably below the $2.4 billion recorded in 2023. The company forecasts a “mid-teens percentage decline.”
Consequently, Polestar has collaborated with its parent company, Geely Holdings, and the lending banks to revise the revenue target outlined in the loan agreement.
Accounting Errors and Leadership Changes
Polestar also revealed on Thursday the necessity to restate its financial statements for the past two years. This is due to accounting inaccuracies concerning the tooling utilized in vehicle production.
The company acknowledged underreporting assets and liabilities related to this tooling. Additional, minor errors will also be corrected during the restatement process.
These developments follow a year of restructuring for Polestar, including workforce reductions and the appointment of a new CEO, CFO, and COO. The company also lost financial support from Volvo in 2024.
Future Model Plans and Expansion
Despite these challenges, Polestar remains optimistic about future sales growth driven by new models. The Polestar 5, a sedan based on the 2021 Precept concept, is scheduled for launch later this year.
The company also intends to expand its sales operations into France during the current year.
Introducing the Polestar 7
Polestar announced that the forthcoming Polestar 7 will be a “premium compact SUV.” This will position the brand within a highly popular and profitable vehicle segment.
However, the company must navigate its current financial situation to reach the point of releasing this model, for which a specific launch date has not yet been announced.
