Porter Road Raises $10 Million to Expand Sustainable Butchery

Porter Road Secures $10 Million to Advance Sustainable Meat Practices
For almost a decade, since its inception as a whole-animal butchery in East Nashville, the team behind Porter Road has been dedicated to reshaping the American meat industry.
The company has now received $10 million in funding from investors including L37 Ventures, River Park Ventures, Middleland, FJ Labs, Kelvin Beachum, as well as existing investors MAX Ventures, Tribeca Venture Partners and Slow Ventures. This investment will facilitate the expansion of their core mission nationwide.
Growth Through Direct-to-Consumer Sales and Wholesale
Since acquiring its own slaughterhouse in 2015 and launching e-commerce operations in 2018, Porter Road has been delivering a curated selection of lamb, beef, pork, chicken, and sausages sourced from local farms to customers throughout the United States.
These new funds will be allocated to scaling the company’s sustainable agricultural practices and expanding the availability of its pasture-raised meat. This includes bolstering its direct-to-consumer business, supporting its Nashville retail location, and increasing wholesale distribution to restaurants across the country.
Expanding Operations in Kentucky
A key component of this expansion involves a significant investment in its Princeton, Kentucky facility. A new USDA processing plant, 4.5 times the size of the current operation, will be constructed to accommodate growing demand.
This expansion is projected to create 80 new employment opportunities within the town and contributes to a broader revitalization of agriculture in Kentucky.
L37 Partner Randall Ussery commented, “It’s easy to support founders who possess both practical manufacturing experience and strategic boardroom acumen, and who demonstrate a unique perspective coupled with the expertise to realize their vision.” He further stated, “They have refined the Porter Road approach over years, a methodology that cannot be quickly duplicated by competitors. They are a dominant force in the meat industry and have effectively protected their brand.”
Prioritizing Safety and Sustainability
Porter Road’s operational differences compared to larger industry players were particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Through a carefully managed production schedule and implementation of safety protocols – including staggered breaks, mandatory masks, and social distancing – the company successfully prevented outbreaks at its facilities, according to co-founder and CEO Chris Carter. Carter noted, “While a few individuals contracted the virus, it did not spread within our Princeton facility.”
A Focus on Whole Animal Utilization
Despite the increasing popularity of plant-based diets, Carter believes that the company’s commitment to pasture-raised animals and whole-animal butchery will resonate with consumers who prioritize sustainable production methods. “We are deeply committed to the well-being of our farmers and the humane treatment of our animals,” Carter explained. “This is the core principle driving our work. Porter Road emphasizes complete animal utilization, ensuring every part of the animal is respectfully used.”
The company is also diversifying its product offerings to include cooking tallow and fats, as well as cross-cut bones specifically for bone marrow preparations.
Chris Carter emphasized, “The current food system requires significant reform, and today’s consumers are seeking a more direct connection to their food sources. They are discerning and can recognize misleading marketing tactics.” He concluded, “We are dedicated to providing trust, transparency, and exceptional flavor, allowing consumers to make informed choices while simultaneously supporting our farming partners.”
