Project Astra: Gemini and Google Search Updates

Project Astra to Enhance Google Search, Gemini, and Developer Tools
During Google I/O 2025, Google revealed that Project Astra – its AI experience characterized by minimal delay and multimodal functionality – will be integrated into a range of new features. These enhancements will be available across Google Search, the Gemini AI app, and applications developed by third-party partners.
New Search Live Feature Powered by Project Astra
A key development is the introduction of Search Live within Google Search. Utilizing AI Mode, Google’s AI-driven search functionality, or Lens, its visual search tool, users can now activate the “Live” button. This allows them to pose questions regarding their immediate surroundings captured through their smartphone camera.
Project Astra processes live video and audio feeds, delivering responses to user inquiries with remarkably low latency. This creates a near real-time interactive experience.
From Demo to Development: Project Astra's Evolution
Initially showcased at Google I/O 2024 via a widely shared smart glasses demonstration, Project Astra originated within Google DeepMind. Its purpose was to demonstrate the potential of almost instantaneous, multimodal AI processing.
Google is now collaborating with companies like Samsung and Warby Parker to develop the Project Astra smart glasses. However, a definitive launch date remains unspecified.
Expanded Capabilities for Developers with the Live API
Project Astra is also enhancing Google’s Live API, a developer tool facilitating low-latency voice interactions with Gemini. Developers can now create applications that accept both audio and visual input, and provide audio output, mirroring the functionality of Project Astra.
The updated Live API incorporates improved emotion detection, enabling more contextually appropriate AI responses. Furthermore, it leverages the reasoning capabilities of Gemini’s AI models.
Gemini App Gains Real-Time Video and Screen-Sharing
Users of the Gemini app will soon have access to Project Astra’s real-time video and screen-sharing features. Previously, this visual input functionality was exclusive to paid subscribers.
The Future of Project Astra: Smart Glasses and Beyond
Google expresses strong confidence in Project Astra’s potential to shape the future of its product line, potentially even establishing a new category of smart glasses. Despite this optimism, the launch date for the Project Astra smart glasses demonstrated last year remains undetermined.
While further details regarding the smart glasses have been revealed, their widespread availability appears to be some time away.
