Render Secures $20 Million Series A Funding

Render, a DevOps cloud platform and winner of the Disrupt SF 2019 Startup Battlefield, has announced the successful completion of a $20 million Series A funding round. The investment was led by Addition, with participation from existing investors General Catalyst and South Park Commons.

Initial Investment and Growth

Addition initially invested a smaller amount in Render in February 2020, even though the company wasn't actively seeking funding at the time, as stated by co-founder and CEO Anurag Goel.

Render previously announced a seed round of $4.5 million in October 2020, following significant interest generated after Disrupt. This latest funding brings the startup’s total raised capital to $26.75 million.

Future Plans and Expansion

The San Francisco-based company intends to utilize these funds to significantly expand its team. They aim to triple their current workforce of 35 employees by the end of 2022.

This expansion will primarily focus on bolstering product development and enhancing customer support. Render also plans to broaden its global data center presence.

Specifically, the company intends to add at least 10 new regions in 2022, improving latency for users. This will include the first-time launch of services in both the APAC and EMEA regions.

New Features and Accessibility

Render is planning to introduce several new features to its platform. These include a free plan for both web services and databases, increasing accessibility to its offerings.

Furthermore, the company will implement built-in DDoS protection for its customers, enhancing the security of their deployments.

Notable Customers and Use Cases

A significant portion of Render’s clientele utilizes the platform for their complete cloud infrastructure needs.

Notable customers include publicly traded Anker, the online developer community Indie Hackers, and the Web3 platform NEAR.

Many customers are leveraging Render to host popular open source projects, such as Elasticsearch, MySQL, and MongoDB. This provides a cost-effective alternative to expensive managed services.

Render simplifies the management of these complex projects, making them more accessible to developers.

Competitive Landscape

Render positions itself as a competitor to the “big three” cloud providers – Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud – by offering a comprehensive feature set at a competitive price point.

Many customers are migrating to Render from platforms like Heroku and AWS, citing benefits such as “increased flexibility, better performance and access to modern features.”

These modern features include infrastructure-as-code, private networking, and persistent storage.

Simplified Cloud Management

Once a customer selects a service for deployment, Render streamlines the management process and underlying infrastructure.

According to Goel, traditional cloud providers like AWS were designed for an era where infrastructure management was a core competency.

“While the large providers necessitate substantial and specialized DevOps engineering resources, we deliver simplicity and a superior developer experience at a significantly reduced cost,” Goel explained.
