Gaming Accessibility: Challenges and Opportunities - Report

Accessibility in Gaming: A Growing Focus

The gaming world, encompassing both those who create and enjoy games, is increasingly recognizing accessibility as a fundamental aspect of the experience. However, significant progress remains to be made.

A recent report examining the requirements and behaviors of gamers with disabilities in the United Kingdom indicates that millions globally encounter regular challenges when playing, purchasing, or generally engaging with games.

Key Findings of the Scope Study

The study, conducted by the advocacy group Scope and analyzed by Eurogamer’s Vivek Gohil, surveyed 1,326 individuals – 812 with disabilities and 514 without – regarding the obstacles they face within the gaming landscape.

A substantial two-thirds of respondents reported experiencing barriers to gaming. The most frequently cited issues were the limited availability and high cost of assistive technology.

Many gamers indicated that they had refrained from purchasing games due to a lack of accessibility features. Others were unable to play, or return, games they had already bought because of these same limitations.

The Economic Impact of Inclusive Gaming

Notably, disabled gamers demonstrate a higher propensity to purchase in-game items, view esports competitions, and actively participate on various gaming platforms.

Within the U.K. alone, the 14 million people with disabilities possess considerable disposable income. A significant portion of this group are active gamers, representing a valuable demographic that is often overlooked in advertising and game design.

Positive Trends in Game Development

This situation is beginning to shift as more prominent developers acknowledge that accessibility options enhance the gaming experience for all players.

Recent major releases, including Ratchet & Clank, The Last of Us: Part II, and Forza Horizon 5, incorporate a diverse range of accommodations. These address needs such as colorblindness, adjustable game speed, and customizable difficulty settings.

Advancements in Assistive Hardware

Furthermore, the development of assistive devices by smaller companies is expanding, catering to a wide spectrum of requirements.

Microsoft’s Xbox Adaptive Controller has also proven exceptionally popular among gamers who are unable to utilize conventional controllers.

The company recently organized an esports tournament centered around inclusivity, in partnership with the Special Olympics.

Challenges Beyond Technology

Despite these advancements, there is a consensus that further improvements are necessary. The Scope study revealed that in-game chat environments, often problematic even under ideal circumstances, can be particularly hostile towards individuals with disabilities.

Addressing negative attitudes towards disability online was identified as the most pressing priority by survey participants. Increased and more authentic representation of people with disabilities in games, alongside more affordable assistive technology, were also deemed crucial.

The Value of Research and Advocacy

The necessity for enhanced accessibility in gaming is evident, but quantifying this need can be difficult. Therefore, studies like this one are exceptionally valuable.
