Roku Launches Howdy: A New $2.99 Ad-Free Streaming Service

Roku Introduces Howdy, a New Ad-Free Streaming Option

Roku has announced the launch of Howdy, a new subscription-based streaming service that distinguishes itself by offering an entirely ad-free viewing experience.

Priced at $2.99 monthly, Howdy provides access to a substantial content library.

Content Library and Partnerships

The service boasts approximately 10,000 hours of programming. This includes content sourced from key partners such as Lionsgate, Warner Bros. Discovery, and FilmRise.

Select Roku Original titles will also be available on the platform.

Viewers can anticipate a diverse selection of films and television series, including titles like “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “The Blind Side,” “Weeds,” and “Kids in the Hall.”

The catalog will feature a variety of genres, encompassing romantic comedies, medical dramas, and comedies from the 1990s.

Strategic Positioning and Acquisition

According to Anthony Wood, founder and CEO of Roku, Howdy is intentionally positioned to enhance, rather than directly challenge, existing premium streaming services.

This launch follows Roku’s recent acquisition of Frndly TV for $185 million, a streaming service specializing in live television, on-demand video, and cloud DVR capabilities.

Integration with The Roku Channel and User Base

Howdy will operate alongside The Roku Channel, Roku’s established free, ad-supported streaming service (FAST).

Recent data indicates that The Roku Channel currently leads the FAST market, surpassing competitors like Tubi and Pluto TV in popularity.

Roku reports that over 125 million individuals utilize The Roku Channel on a daily basis.

Growth Potential and Recent Financial Performance

A significant advantage for Howdy lies in Roku’s extensive organic reach.

The company has confirmed exceeding 90 million active streaming households.

In its recent second-quarter financial report, Roku demonstrated a revenue growth of 15%, exceeding expectations.

Total streaming hours on the platform reached 35.4 billion, representing an increase of 5.2 billion hours year-over-year.
