Routefusion Secures $10.5M to Revolutionize Cross-Border Payments

Routefusion Simplifies Cross-Border Payments with $10.5M Funding
In 2016, Colton Seal and Richard Scappaticci, the co-founders of Routefusion, initially set out to establish a neobank. However, they encountered substantial difficulties integrating with banking institutions to facilitate international money transfers for their users.
Seal explained to TechCrunch that providing cross-border payment solutions required navigating a highly fragmented market. This market was populated by payment providers utilizing complex and inefficient systems.
Challenges in the Financial Landscape
Banks and financial institutions primarily focus on risk management, rather than specializing in payments. This isn’t necessarily a failing on their part, potentially stemming from regulatory requirements or other factors. As newcomers to the industry, Seal and Scappaticci faced numerous obstacles in establishing bank partnerships and securing the necessary compliance approvals.
The varying regulatory landscapes across different nations further complicated the development of user-friendly cross-border payment tools. Consequently, Seal and Scappaticci pivoted from their neobank concept and launched Routefusion, aiming to streamline this intricate process.
Routefusion grants its clients access to over 12 different banking and foreign exchange providers through a unified API (application programming interface).
Routefusion’s Core Differentiation
Seal emphasizes that Routefusion excels in product development, customer service, and API creation. He states that their banking and foreign exchange partners are adept at building payment infrastructure and ensuring regulatory compliance.
The company officially began operations in 2019 and has experienced a doubling of its customer base, reaching almost 40, since its initial institutional funding round in February of the previous year. Currently, Routefusion primarily serves B2B payments, though it is also utilized for remittances.
Significant Revenue Growth and Funding
Routefusion’s revenue has increased by 5,000% to a seven-figure amount during the same timeframe, according to company reports. Specific financial details were not disclosed by Seal.
A recent “seed prime” funding round secured $10.5 million for Routefusion, bringing the total institutional funding to $14.1 million. Canvas Ventures spearheaded the latest round, with contributions from existing investors like Silverton Partners and Initialized Capital, as well as new investor Haymaker Ventures.
Angel investors Sherwin Gandhi (co-founder of Jeeves) and Aldrin Clement (co-founder of Novel Bank) also participated in this funding round.
Future Expansion Plans
Routefusion intends to expand its team from 20 to over 40 employees by the end of the current year. Seal is prioritizing the expansion of Routefusion’s product offerings into Latin America, Europe, the United Kingdom, and Canada.
The company is also proactively investigating potential markets in Africa, anticipating increased demand within the next two years.
Competitive Advantages and Customer Focus
Seal highlights that Routefusion is uniquely positioned as one of only two payments API companies, alongside Stripe, founded by software engineers. This background provides a distinct competitive edge.
He envisions Routefusion being perceived as an integral extension of their clients’ teams, rather than a detached external payments provider.
Investor Perspective
Rebecca Lynn, who led Canvas Ventures’ investment, noted Routefusion’s developer-centric approach facilitates significantly faster customer onboarding compared to traditional providers. Lynn, a former engineer with a strong product focus, was particularly impressed by the overwhelmingly positive customer feedback.
Lynn stated that customer opinions are paramount, outweighing her own assessments of the company or its product. The enthusiastic response from Routefusion’s customers was a key factor in her investment decision.
“While the payments space appears crowded at first glance, Routefusion is uniquely addressing the crucial middleware challenge,” Lynn concluded.
