San Francisco: Leading City for New Transportation Technology

San Francisco Leads in Urban Mobility Technology Readiness

A recently published urban mobility readiness index identifies San Francisco as the city best positioned to embrace emerging transportation technologies. These include advancements in artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, and even air taxis.

Index Methodology and Overall Rankings

The index, a collaborative effort between the Oliver Wyman Forum and the University of California, Berkeley, assessed 70 cities worldwide. Evaluation criteria encompassed factors vital to modern urban life.

  • Walkability
  • Air quality
  • Electric vehicle (EV) adoption and charging infrastructure
  • Pedestrian presence
  • Public transit accessibility
  • Cycling infrastructure

Based on these factors, San Francisco achieved the highest overall ranking. Paris, Singapore, Munich, and Amsterdam followed closely behind, securing the subsequent positions.

Technology Adoption Sub-Index Highlights

When specifically considering technological preparedness, the rankings shifted. A new sub-index was introduced this year to gauge cities’ readiness for technologies like autonomous vehicles.

San Francisco maintained its leading position in this focused assessment. The city’s status as a hub for autonomous vehicle companies, coupled with the commercial operation of Waymo’s robotaxi service, contributed significantly to this outcome.

Completing the top five cities most prepared for technology adoption were Los Angeles, Shanghai, Beijing, and Seoul. These cities demonstrate a strong capacity to integrate and benefit from innovative transportation solutions.
