PlayStation 5: No In-Store Purchases at Launch | Sony

A minor development in the competition between gaming consoles. Sony announced via Twitter today that the PlayStation 5 will not be sold in physical stores on its release date (November 12th or 19th, based on your location). Instead, customers will be limited to purchasing the console online on those dates. Pre-orders for the next-generation console began in mid-September, but high demand initially led to some difficulties with the process.

According to a statement on Sony’s blog, this decision was made, in part, due to health and safety considerations related to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic.

“To ensure the well-being of our players, retail partners, and employees during the COVID-19 pandemic, we are confirming that all launch day sales will take place through the online platforms of our retail partners,” the company stated. “[P]lease refrain from camping out or queuing at local stores on launch day with the expectation of purchasing a PS5 console. Prioritize your safety, remain at home, and complete your order online.”

Microsoft’s newest consoles – the Xbox Series X/S – are scheduled to become available worldwide two days earlier. Lucas published a review of the system earlier today. Regarding Sony’s offering, Devin has currently presented a practical examination of the console’s controller.
