SpaceX Falcon 9 Booster Flies 9th Time, Launches Starlink Satellites

SpaceX Continues Starlink Expansion with Record-Breaking Booster Reuse

SpaceX has recently added another 60 Starlink satellites to its orbital network, bringing the total deployed within the last two weeks to 180. This significantly contributes to the growing constellation, which now exceeds 1,000 satellites.

Falcon 9 Booster Achieves New Reusability Milestone

Today’s launch also marked a new achievement for SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket reusability program. The first-stage booster utilized in this mission successfully completed its ninth flight and ninth landing.

This particular booster has a notable flight history, having been previously employed in diverse missions. These include five prior Starlink deployments, as well as the crucial Demo-1 mission for the Crew Dragon capsule.

Demonstrating Reusability and Rapid Turnaround

The Demo-1 mission served as an uncrewed test flight, validating the capsule’s functionality from launch through docking with the International Space Station and subsequent return to Earth.

SpaceX previously established its reusability record in January with another Starlink launch, utilizing the same refurbished first stage. This booster had flown just prior to that, in December of the previous year.

SpaceX’s focus extends beyond simply reflying boosters multiple times; they are also prioritizing rapid turnaround times between missions. Both speed and launch volume are critical factors in reducing overall launch costs.

Importance of Rocket Reuse for Starlink Deployment

Rocket reuse is especially vital for the frequent Starlink missions that are accelerating as SpaceX strives to broaden the global availability of its broadband internet service.

This launch represents the third deployment of 60 satellites within a mere 10-day period. The most recent prior launch occurred just last Thursday, following another on the Thursday before.

Continued Launch Cadence and Cost Mitigation

SpaceX anticipates maintaining a similar launch pace in the near future, with two additional Starlink launches scheduled before the end of March. One is tentatively planned for next Sunday.

As the customer for these missions, SpaceX is currently absorbing the launch costs. However, as Starlink moves beyond its beta phase and generates increased revenue, reflying boosters will be instrumental in mitigating overall expenditures.
