Spotify Podcast Discovery: New Features to Find Your Next Listen

Spotify Enhances Podcast Discovery with New Features
On Wednesday, Spotify unveiled a series of new functionalities aimed at elevating the visibility of podcasts within its platform. This move positions Spotify in direct competition with Apple and YouTube as they vie to become the leading podcast streaming service for users.
New Features for Users
Spotify is implementing podcast recommendations directly on its Home page. This will expose users to new content they might enjoy. Furthermore, a dedicated Following feed is being introduced to keep listeners informed about the latest episodes from their preferred shows.
Soon, podcast creators will have access to innovative tools. These tools will facilitate content recommendations and foster greater interaction with their audience through comments.
Competition in the Podcast Landscape
While these changes are incremental, they represent Spotify’s ongoing commitment to challenging Apple’s Podcasts app and YouTube’s growing presence in the podcasting sphere. YouTube has significantly increased its investment in podcasts in recent years.
For example, YouTube recently launched a weekly chart of top podcasts. This was a direct challenge to Spotify and Apple’s existing charts. The YouTube chart reveals notable differences in preferences between its video audience and podcast listeners on other platforms.
Spotify's Investment in Video Podcasts
Spotify has also been actively investing in video podcasts. The platform now allows all creators to upload video content. Additionally, it incentivizes successful shows through payments via its Partner Program.
Despite these efforts, YouTube currently holds the leading position in the U.S. market. Approximately one-third of weekly podcast listeners favor YouTube over Spotify or Apple.
Early Results and the Following Feed
Spotify reports that the initial rollout of podcast recommendations on the Home tab has yielded positive results. User engagement with podcasts, including saving and liking shows, has demonstrably increased.
A new Following feed is also being introduced. This dedicated space will allow users to easily access the latest episodes from the podcasts they subscribe to. Users can access this feature by tapping the Podcasts button, then selecting the Following button.
Tools for Podcast Creators
Podcast creators will soon be able to link to other content mentioned within their episodes. This includes other podcasts, songs, audiobooks, and playlists available on Spotify. This feature will be accessible on the episode page in the coming weeks.
A minor update will also allow creators to utilize emoji reactions when responding to fans in the comments section of their podcast pages.
Creator Control Over Comments
Creators retain full control over comment visibility. They can choose when comments appear or opt to disable them entirely on their shows or individual episode pages through their Spotify for Creators account.
