Spotify AI Voice Interface: Future Chat Features Hinted

Spotify's Future: A More Conversational AI Experience

Spotify has previously explored voice-based interactions, and recently launched an AI DJ capable of suggesting music and responding to user requests. Now, the company indicates that advancements in generative AI could lead to a significantly more conversational interface for the streaming platform.

Leveraging User Interactions as a New Dataset

During Spotify’s second-quarter earnings call, Chief Product and Technology Officer Gustav Söderström highlighted the impact of AI on the business. He explained that users are now able to interact with Spotify using natural language to request music.

This capability is providing Spotify with a valuable new source of data. Söderström described it as a unique dataset, moving beyond song-to-song relationships – similar to the “customers who bought this also bought that” approach used by Amazon – to understanding the connection between spoken phrases and musical preferences.

The Value of Voice Data

The voice interface is yielding new insights for the company, and this data is being collected at a rapid pace. This influx of information is considered “very, very valuable” by Spotify’s leadership.

Consequently, Spotify anticipates its user experiences will become “much more interactive.” Users can already communicate with Spotify through text and voice, and this functionality is expected to expand considerably.

Moving Beyond Prediction to Reasoning

AI technology will enable Spotify to move beyond simply predicting listening preferences for music, podcasts, and audiobooks. The platform aims to “reason” based on a user’s listening history and their interactions with the AI DJ.

This suggests an interest in advanced AI reasoning models capable of handling complex, multi-step tasks. The goal is to create a more nuanced and responsive user experience.

AI DJ as a Data Source

The voice data originates from Spotify’s AI DJ feature, introduced in May. Premium subscribers can utilize voice commands to modify music selection, genre, or mood by activating a button within the application.

Internal Applications of AI

Spotify is also implementing generative AI internally to accelerate product prototyping and improve efficiency in areas like finance. This demonstrates a broad commitment to AI across the organization.

Recent Performance and Challenges

In the last quarter, Spotify reached 276 million paying subscribers, a 12% year-over-year increase, and 696 million monthly active users. However, the company reported a loss due to missed revenue targets.

The stock price experienced a 10% decline following weak guidance and comments from CEO Daniel Ek expressing dissatisfaction with the company’s advertising business.

  • Key Takeaway: Spotify is actively investing in AI to create a more personalized and interactive listening experience.
  • Future Outlook: Expect a more conversational interface and advanced AI-powered features in the coming months.
