Spotify & Netflix Partner for Video Podcasts | New Distribution Deal

Spotify and Netflix Announce Video Podcast Partnership
A collaboration between Spotify and Netflix will bring select video podcasts to the streaming giant beginning next year, as revealed by Spotify on Tuesday.
This partnership aligns with Spotify’s ongoing efforts to broaden its video content offerings and enhance its advertising revenue streams.
Initial Podcast Selection
The initial launch will feature a carefully chosen collection of podcasts spanning sports, culture, lifestyle, and true crime genres. Content will be sourced from both Spotify Studios and The Ringer.
Spotify intends to progressively expand the available podcast library, incorporating additional shows from diverse studios and categories over time.
Spotify’s Focus on Video Podcasts
This move represents a continuation of Spotify’s increasing emphasis on video podcasts. The company previously introduced tools enabling creators to publish their content in video format.
In the past year, incentives were implemented to financially reward popular video podcasters, and a Partner Program was launched to facilitate monetization of video content, directly challenging platforms like YouTube.
Enhanced Audience Engagement Tools
Spotify has also recently integrated a suite of social features designed to foster audience interaction. These include polls, Q&A sessions, and comment sections.
Strategic Shift in Podcast Strategy
Spotify’s pursuit of video streaming follows a significant strategic adjustment in its podcast approach during 2023. This included workforce reductions, notably the departure of Dawn Ostroff, who previously oversaw podcast initiatives.
Under Ostroff’s leadership, substantial investments were made in podcasts, with acquisitions of studios like Parcast, The Ringer, and Gimlet Media, alongside exclusive deals with prominent figures such as Joe Rogan and Alex Cooper – agreements that have since concluded.
The Drive for Profitability
Despite considerable investment, these ventures did not yield the anticipated financial returns, prompting a revised strategy. The company now believes video, particularly among Gen Z, presents greater opportunities for advertising and revenue generation.
As of the second quarter of 2025, Spotify reports hosting over 430,000 video podcasts, with video consumption growing at a rate 20 times faster than audio-only content since 2024. Over 350 million Spotify users have engaged with video content on the platform, a 65% increase year-over-year.
Deal Details Remain Confidential
Spotify declined to disclose specific details regarding the financial arrangements of the partnership with Netflix, including any revenue-sharing or monetization models.
Rollout Plan
The initial availability of Spotify’s video podcasts will be limited to users in the United States, starting in early 2026. Expansion to other international markets is planned subsequently.
Industry Impact
“This partnership signifies a pivotal moment for the podcasting landscape,” stated Roman Wasenmüller, Spotify VP and Head of Podcasts. “By collaborating with Netflix, we are broadening content discovery, empowering creators to connect with new audiences, and providing fans worldwide with access to compelling stories and unexpected favorites.”
He further added that this collaboration provides creators with more options and unlocks a novel distribution channel.
Recent Financial Performance
Spotify’s stock experienced a decline following its latest earnings report in July, as advertising revenues decreased despite growth in user numbers and subscriptions.
The company reassured investors that it remains confident in its overall strategy and its ability to revitalize its programmatic advertising business.
