Spotify Educational Courses: What We Know

Spotify Expands Beyond Music with Educational Courses
Spotify is broadening the scope of its streaming platform to encompass educational content, alongside its existing offerings of music, podcasts, and audiobooks.
The company announced on Tuesday the introduction of a new feature called “Courses,” designed to facilitate learning across diverse subjects, including business, technology, lifestyle, and musical disciplines.
Initial Launch and Potential U.S. Expansion
Currently, this feature is being tested in the United Kingdom. However, emerging indicators suggest a forthcoming rollout in the United States is highly probable.
Chris Messina, a technology enthusiast and early adopter, identified evidence of the Courses feature being developed for the U.S. market.
Course Content and Library Filtering
Messina’s observations reveal that courses will cover topics appealing to a technically inclined audience, such as AI, Web3, the metaverse, and other contemporary digital tools.
Furthermore, users will soon have the ability to refine their Spotify Library view to specifically display “Podcasts & Courses,” a change from the current “Podcasts” only option.
Although Spotify has not officially confirmed a U.S. launch, Messina successfully accessed the Courses section through a search, albeit with empty category pages.
This suggests the U.S. implementation is still undergoing final development stages.
Diversification and Monetization Strategies
Spotify has been actively pursuing strategies to establish itself as more than just a music streaming service.
By incorporating various audio and video formats, the company aims to diversify its revenue streams through multiple monetization methods.
These include advertising within audio and video podcasts, including AI-driven advertisements, and offering paid “top-up” hours for audiobooks, catering to subscribers who exceed their complimentary 15-hour monthly allowance.
Additionally, Spotify is challenging Audible’s dominance with a dedicated audiobook subscription priced at $10 per month.
Potential Revenue Generation from Courses
The introduction of Courses presents Spotify with another opportunity to generate revenue by charging users for access to select programs.
Featured Courses (Currently U.K. Only)
Spotify has highlighted a selection of courses currently available in the U.K. as recommended starting points:
- Self-Care Through Creativity with Sara Beth Morgan.
- Delicious Vegetarian Cooking with Marco Pierre White.
- Communication Fundamentals at Work with Jessica Chen.
- Plants at Home: Uplift Your Spirit & Your Space with Christopher Griffin.
Note: This article has been updated to reflect that Courses initially began piloting in the U.K. last year, with recent findings indicating a potential imminent launch in the U.S.
