Spotify SongDNA: Discover the Creators Behind Your Music

Spotify's Potential "SongDNA" Feature: A Deep Dive
Spotify is currently in development of a new feature, tentatively named “SongDNA.” This functionality aims to enhance music discovery by focusing on the individuals involved in a track’s creation.
Uncovering the Contributors
The core concept of SongDNA is to allow users to explore music through the lens of its creators. This includes songwriters, vocalists, engineers, lyricists, producers, composers, and all other collaborators.
Reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong initially discovered the feature within the Spotify app’s code. She subsequently shared screenshots illustrating how SongDNA might be presented to users.
A Visual Exploration of Music Credits
Based on Wong’s findings, SongDNA would offer a visual interface. Users could navigate through the credits of a song or album, observing the connections between different contributors.
This would enable exploration of each individual’s broader body of work, extending beyond the specific track being viewed.
Real-World Example: Rei Ami
Wong demonstrated the feature’s potential using Rei Ami, a vocalist from “KPop Demon Hunters.” SongDNA revealed her contributions to other musical projects outside of the movie soundtrack.
Competition and Industry Impact
If launched publicly, SongDNA could present a challenge to TIDAL’s existing interactive credits feature. TIDAL also allows users to explore music based on the contributions of its creators.
The addition could prove valuable for music industry professionals seeking potential collaborators. It would also benefit listeners interested in learning more about the people behind their favorite songs.
Feature Removal and Confirmation
Shortly after Wong’s initial post, Spotify updated its app, removing references to SongDNA. However, the company declined to comment further, stopping short of a complete denial.
Chris Messina, another reverse engineer, independently confirmed SongDNA’s existence by identifying related code within the app. He suggests the feature will map the network of contributors and facilitate discovery of their other projects.
SongDNA vs. Pandora’s Music Genome Project
Some have speculated whether SongDNA represents Spotify’s response to Pandora’s Music Genome Project. However, the two approaches differ significantly.
The Music Genome Project classifies tracks based on hundreds of musical “traits” and characteristics. SongDNA, at present, appears to concentrate solely on the human element – the individuals involved in music creation.
Currently, the focus remains on showcasing the people behind the music, rather than analyzing the music itself.
