Despite being a highly impactful method for enhancing a child's learning, tutoring remains inaccessible to a significant portion of students in the United States. Recent data, specifically a 2023 survey of major school districts, reveals that less than 10% of students are currently receiving tutoring services.

A primary obstacle is the cost associated with tutoring, which can often reach hundreds or even thousands of dollars monthly, placing it out of reach for many families.

Introducing Super Teacher: AI-Powered Tutoring

Tim Novikoff, a former Google product manager and experienced educator, is working to address this disparity. His company, Super Teacher, provides an AI-driven tutoring application designed for elementary school students.

The app is offered at a price point of $15 per month, or $10 with an annual subscription, aiming to broaden access to private tutoring across the nation.

Growth and Adoption of Super Teacher

The four-year-old startup is experiencing considerable growth. Novikoff reports that approximately 20,000 families have already registered for Super Teacher.

Furthermore, public school systems in New York, New Jersey, and Hawaii have begun integrating the app into their educational programs.

Super Teacher was also recognized as a Top 20 finalist at the Startup Battlefield during TechCrunch Disrupt 2025, held in San Francisco.

The Inspiration Behind Super Teacher

Novikoff’s background includes prior experience as a mathematics teacher in New York City, serving in both Harlem and at the prestigious Stuyvesant High School.

He observed a significant difference in the educational opportunities available to students at these two schools; nearly all students at Stuyvesant benefited from tutoring, while many in Harlem did not.

“Tutoring represents the single most effective intervention available to support children’s education, and its impact is undeniable,” Novikoff stated. “The inequity of access to this resource is concerning, and I am dedicated to making private tutoring universally available.”

How Super Teacher Works

The Super Teacher application utilizes animated tutors with AI-generated voices to guide students through engaging, interactive lessons.

Students interact with the app using voice commands, simulating a conversation with a human teacher.

Importantly, Super Teacher avoids the use of large language models for generating responses, instead relying on a deterministic system to ensure consistently accurate answers, mitigating the potential for inaccuracies.

AI as a Tool, Not a Replacement

Novikoff believes that AI tutors can significantly benefit children’s learning journeys, but he firmly maintains that AI will not supplant the role of teachers in traditional school environments.

He views AI tutors as valuable tools for educators, comparable to smart boards or calculators, rather than complete replacements.

Future Plans for Expansion

Currently, Super Teacher is focused on serving elementary school students, a strategic decision driven by Novikoff’s desire to assist his own children and a recognized gap in the edtech market.

Looking forward, the company intends to extend its services to encompass younger and older grade levels and establish partnerships with additional school districts throughout the United States.

Prior to Super Teacher, Novikoff founded Fly Labs, a mobile video-editing application that was acquired by Google in 2015.
