Techstars NYC Announces 2024 Startup Cohort

Techstars NYC has recently revealed the ten startups selected for participation in this year's accelerator program. Managing Director Jenny Fielding characterized the group as the most internationally diverse cohort to date.

Global Reach of the Program

Fielding noted that applications have consistently been received from across the globe. She previously had the ability to accept companies from any location. However, maintaining a local presence was considered important.

Specifically, there was an expectation to include at least five companies originating from New York to support the local entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Shift to a Virtual Model

With the program now predominantly conducted virtually, Fielding expressed a newfound freedom to broaden the geographical scope of participant selection.

Notably, this year’s cohort features no startups based in New York City itself. Instead, companies hail from locations including San Francisco, Washington, D.C., France, Israel, Kenya, Portugal, and the United Kingdom.

Maintaining a New York Identity

Despite the lack of New York-based startups, Fielding maintains that the accelerator retains a strong New York identity.

This is achieved by connecting these globally sourced startups with the resources and network of the New York entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Recreating the In-Person Experience

Fielding highlighted that replicating the in-person camaraderie among founders proved to be the most challenging aspect of the virtual accelerator format.

Plans are underway to host an in-person gathering in late May, contingent upon safety regulations, legal considerations, and the comfort levels of the participating entrepreneurs.

The Future of Virtual Elements

Certain elements of the virtual experience are expected to continue even after the pandemic subsides.

For example, Techstars typically engages approximately 200 mentors per class, and the virtual program ensured punctuality for the first time.

The format of Demo Day is also under review, as the extended period of investor meetings appears to be yielding positive fundraising results for the startups.
