Transmit Security Raises $543M to Eliminate Passwords

Transmit Security Secures $543 Million in Series A Funding
Transmit Security, a startup headquartered in Boston, is dedicated to eliminating passwords as a security measure. The company has recently obtained $543 million in Series A funding.
This funding round is notable as the largest Series A investment ever recorded in the cybersecurity sector. It also represents one of the most substantial valuations achieved by a company that was initially self-funded.
Investment Details and Company Valuation
Insight Partners and General Atlantic spearheaded the investment. Additional contributions came from firms including Cyberstarts, Geodesic, SYN Ventures, Vintage, and Artisanal Ventures.
Prior to the funding, Transmit Security was valued at $2.2 billion. The newly acquired capital will be allocated to broadening the company’s operational scope and strategically investing in key global markets to facilitate organizational growth.
The Passwordless Future
The primary objective of this funding is to expedite Transmit Security’s efforts in transitioning the world towards passwordless authentication. The startup emphasizes that organizations incur significant financial losses annually due to the vulnerabilities inherent in password-based systems.
Over 80% of data breaches are attributed to weak passwords. Furthermore, the average cost for help desks to reset a single password exceeds $70.
Transmit Security’s Solution
Transmit Security presents a biometric-based authenticator, which it claims is the first native passwordless solution for identity and risk management. The technology has already gained traction with prominent brands such as Lowe’s, Santander, and UBS.
Currently processing over 9,000 authentication requests every second, the solution reportedly reduces account resets by 96%. It also streamlines customer authentication, decreasing the time required from one minute to just two seconds.
CEO Statement
“Eliminating passwords allows businesses to immediately decrease customer churn and cart abandonment, while simultaneously enhancing the security of personal data,” stated Mickey Boodaei, CEO of Transmit Security. He co-founded the company in 2014.
“Our clientele, spanning retail, banking, finance, telecommunications, and automotive industries, recognize that optimizing the identity experience presents a significant financial challenge. This funding round, secured with support from leading partners, will enable us to substantially expand our reach in our mission to eliminate passwords globally.”
Industry Trend: Moving Beyond Passwords
Transmit Security is not alone in its pursuit of a passwordless future. Microsoft has announced plans to enable password-free access to Windows 10. Apple recently unveiled Passkeys in iCloud Keychain, a passwordless authentication method leveraging WebAuthn, Face ID, and Touch ID.
This demonstrates a growing industry-wide consensus on the need for more secure and user-friendly authentication methods.
