InstaDeep Raises $100M to Advance AI Research | Tunisia Startup

AI's Growing Influence on Global Business Operations
A recent CNBC survey indicates that a substantial 81% of global executives anticipate Artificial Intelligence will be a key component in their business strategies throughout the current year.
Organizations are transitioning beyond initial AI applications focused on pattern recognition, text analysis, and image identification, towards AI systems capable of informed decision-making in intricate scenarios.
InstaDeep Secures $100 Million in Series B Funding
InstaDeep, an enterprise AI startup originating from Tunis and London, specializing in the creation of decision-making systems for real-world challenges, has successfully raised $100 million in Series B financing.
Alpha Intelligence Capital and CDIB spearheaded the funding round.
Notable participants in this round included BioNTech, the developer of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine, Chimera Abu Dhabi, Deutsche Bahn’s DB Digital Ventures, Google, G42, and Synergie.
Company Background and Global Presence
Founded in 2014 by Karim Beguir and Zohra Slim, InstaDeep is a Tunisian startup with its headquarters in London.
The company maintains offices in Paris, Tunis, Lagos, Dubai, and Cape Town, leveraging advanced machine learning techniques to integrate AI into enterprise-level applications.
According to CEO Beguir, the company’s AI and machine learning solutions address a diverse range of challenges.
Diverse Applications of InstaDeep’s Technology
These challenges encompass optimizing container transport for large shipping companies and automating scheduling for railway networks exceeding 30,000 kilometers with over 10,000 trains.
Furthermore, InstaDeep’s technology is applied to the design of advanced therapeutics and the routing of components on printed circuit boards.
Despite operating in distinct sectors, these problems share underlying similarities, which InstaDeep tackles concurrently using reinforcement learning – a machine learning approach focused on developing optimization strategies.
Strategic Partnerships and Ongoing Projects
InstaDeep is currently collaborating with Deutsche Bahn, Europe’s largest rail operator, on a pioneering project to automate railway scheduling.
Two years prior, the company established a multi-year strategic partnership with BioNTech, resulting in the launch of a joint AI innovation lab dedicated to deploying cutting-edge AI and ML for the development of novel immunotherapies.
Early Warning System for SARS-CoV-2 Variants
A significant achievement emerged in late November with the creation of an early warning system (EWS) for identifying high-risk SARS-CoV-2 variants.
According to a report by FT, this EWS accurately identified over 90% of variants designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) an average of two months in advance, and detected the Omicron variant three days before its classification as a variant of concern.
Collaborations with Google and DeepMind
InstaDeep also works with Google’s AI research teams to develop systems for early detection of desert locust outbreaks in Africa.
The company has engaged in AI initiatives and collaborative research with both DeepMind and Google Research.
Notably, all three organizations have invested in InstaDeep’s latest financing round.
Investor Confidence and Future Outlook
“Our partners and customers have directly observed the capabilities of the InstaDeep platform and team,” stated Beguir.
“Their investment represents a significant milestone and a strong endorsement of our abilities and products, built upon years of close collaboration on complex problems.”
Company History and Growth
From 2014 to 2018, Beguir and Slim initially funded InstaDeep through revenue generated from clients, reinvesting profits into talent acquisition and expansion.
In 2019, the startup secured a $7 million Series A round led by pan-African private equity firm AfricInvest and New York-based Endeavor Catalyst, to facilitate scaling of its systems.
The Value Proposition of AI Solutions
InstaDeep has positioned itself as a global leader in applying AI to solve complex, high-value problems.
For instance, the construction of a single kilometer of railway can cost hundreds of millions of dollars.
Therefore, an intelligent system – such as those developed by InstaDeep – that optimizes train traffic and manages constraints effectively, is a highly marketable asset.
Future Plans and Investment Allocation
The newly acquired funding will be used to expedite the launch of innovative AI products across biotech, logistics, transportation, and electronics manufacturing.
Plans also include enhancing computing infrastructure, expanding operations into the U.S., and recruiting additional talent.
Team Composition and African Roots
InstaDeep currently employs over 170 individuals, with more than 130 dedicated to AI research, engineering, ML, and DevOps.
Half of the team is based in the company’s African offices located in South Africa, Nigeria, and Tunisia.
Championing AI Development in Africa
Initially, Africa was not prominently featured in discussions regarding AI’s contribution to global economic growth.
However, InstaDeep is among a select group of African companies, including South Africa’s Aerobotics and hearX Group, striving to alter this narrative and empower Africa to shape the future of AI.
Building a Competitive African AI Talent Pool
“We have successfully cultivated a culture of high standards and demonstrated that African talent is capable of competing with the best globally,” Beguir emphasized.
“We are proud to have a team spanning multiple countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, with passionate African AI researchers and engineers making significant contributions.”
Overcoming Initial Skepticism
Beguir recalled that when InstaDeep was founded with “two laptops, $2,000, and a great deal of enthusiasm,” many investors and observers in the African tech and AI community questioned the company’s ambition to collaborate with organizations like DeepMind and Google.
The Power of Technology to Transcend Location
However, technology has proven that geographical location is not a barrier to attracting global customers.
This is particularly true for AI and deep tech, provided companies have access to knowledge, experienced talent, and a thriving AI community.
Founder’s Background and Vision
Beguir, of Tunisian and French heritage, received his education in engineering and mathematics in France and the United States.
He founded InstaDeep with the goal of demonstrating that African talent could be competitive, contribute to deep tech advancements, and collaborate with the world’s leading organizations.
A Future Driven by Innovation and Impact
“It is achievable to establish a globally competitive company with strong African roots, seamlessly integrated into the global landscape, and focused on genuine deep-tech innovation, tackling challenges that have never been addressed before,” the CEO stated.
“This has been our journey thus far, and we are eager to build upon it with our investors and partners, striving to make a positive impact on the ecosystems in which we operate and the partners with whom we collaborate.”
