Twitter's Stance on a Potential Trump Return

Concurrent with the unfolding of the former president’s second impeachment trial, further unfavorable developments have emerged. Ned Segal, the Chief Financial Officer of Twitter, recently clarified the company’s long-term approach to Donald Trump’s account during an interview on CNBC’s Squawk Box.

When directly asked about the possibility of reinstating Trump’s account should he run for and win another presidential term, Segal provided a firm response.

Permanent Removal Policy

“Our policies operate on the principle that removal from the platform is absolute, irrespective of an individual’s status,” Segal explained. “This applies equally to commentators, financial officers, and both former and current elected officials.”

He further emphasized the core principle guiding these decisions.

“The fundamental aim of our policies is to prevent the incitement of violence. Any individual engaging in such behavior will be removed from the service, and our guidelines preclude their return.”

Context of the Ban

Twitter permanently banned Trump from its platform one month prior, citing substantial concerns regarding the “potential for continued incitement of violence.”

His actions surrounding the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol building ultimately led to this decision, effectively ending his access to the platform he had utilized for four years.

During that time, he consistently mobilized his supporters, disseminated unsubstantiated claims, and criticized his opponents.
