Twitter Introduces Emoji Reactions in Turkey for Trial Period

As of today, Twitter is initiating a test of Tweet Reactions within Turkey, available for a limited duration. Individuals utilizing the platform in this region will now have the capability to respond to tweets utilizing 😂, 🤔, 👏, and 😢, alongside the existing ❤ option.

Expanding User Expression

This rollout follows the introduction of emoji reactions to Direct Messages last year, though a different selection of emojis is being employed in this new test. The initiative stems from a user survey conducted in March, exploring preferences for engaging with tweets in a manner similar to Facebook, and gauging desired emojis for communication.

Addressing Concerns About Negative Feedback

The survey explored options such as “agree” and “disagree” buttons, a dislike function, and upvote/downvote systems akin to Reddit. However, Twitter discovered that users expressed apprehension regarding the potential for receiving unfavorable emoji responses.

“While emotions like ‘frustration’ and ‘anger’ are frequently experienced when reading tweets, and some users desire to express disagreement, we are not currently incorporating these as emoji reactions,” Twitter stated in an official press release. “Our primary objective is to foster constructive public discourse, and we aim to assess the impact of our current emoji set on conversations.”

A Deliberate Absence of Negative Reactions

In contrast to Facebook’s implementation of reactions in 2015, Twitter is not presently testing an “angry” reaction, despite its consideration in the survey. This decision likely reflects user reservations surrounding negative feedback, though disagreements already occur on the platform regardless.

Promoting Healthier Conversations

Twitter’s intention is for emoji reactions to provide users with a simpler method of conveying their feelings, potentially leading to enhanced expression and greater involvement in public discussions.

This test represents the latest in a series of features Twitter has been experimenting with recently. Users may also observe interest-based communities, full-width media displays, and updated safety measures appearing in their feeds.

Twitter has indicated that it will continue to evaluate community feedback as it explores additional emoji reactions. Depending on user responses, the test’s scope may be broadened to encompass other geographic locations.

The feature is currently available for users in Turkey across iOS, Android, and web platforms, with a phased rollout expected over the coming days.
