Uber Eats Now Allows Merchant-to-Customer Messaging

Uber Eats Introduces New Communication and AI Features
Uber Eats announced on Wednesday a new capability allowing restaurants and merchants to communicate directly with customers. This update is designed to proactively address potential issues with orders before they escalate.
Enhanced Communication with Live Order Chat
The platform is introducing a “Live order chat” feature. This enables merchants to engage with customers in real-time. They can confirm substitutions for unavailable items, clarify specific requests, and verify dietary needs or allergies.
It’s important to note that customers cannot initiate these chats. Merchants must contact customers first. This feature applies to both delivery and pickup orders and concludes when the order is transferred to the delivery person or picked up by the customer.
Following Industry Trends
This launch follows a similar move by DoorDash, a competitor, which introduced merchant-to-customer chat functionality three months prior. This indicates a growing trend in the food delivery industry towards more direct communication.
AI-Powered Tools for Merchants
Uber Eats is also implementing new AI tools to assist merchants. These include AI-generated summaries of customer reviews. This allows for a more efficient understanding of customer feedback on a larger scale.
Furthermore, the platform is rolling out AI-created item descriptions for menus. The goal is to provide users with more detailed information to aid in their ordering decisions.
Improving Visual Appeal with AI
The app will leverage AI to improve the quality of food images. Enhancements will include adjustments to lighting, resolution, composition, and presentation. For instance, AI could transform a photo of food in a takeout container into an image of the same dish plated attractively.
User-Generated Content and Rewards
Uber Eats is now prompting users to submit photos of their delivered meals. Recognizing the influence of visuals on ordering choices, the company aims to expand its image library.
Users who submit photos that are selected for publication can receive $3 in Uber Cash. This incentive is currently available to customers in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and the U.K.
How to Submit Photos
To participate, users should tap the “Add Photos” button on the order rating screen after their delivery is completed. This simple action contributes to a more visually appealing and informative platform for all users.
