UnitedHealth Removes DEI References from Website

UnitedHealth Group Revises Website Content Regarding DEI
UnitedHealth Group has significantly reduced the visibility of its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies on its corporate website. This includes the removal of blog posts and substantial portions of dedicated web pages, as discovered by TechCrunch.
Changes to Website Pages
Archived versions of UnitedHealth’s website demonstrate that several pages formerly focused on DEI are now inaccessible, resulting in “page not found” errors. The company’s career page, which previously featured a distinct section outlining DEI initiatives, no longer displays this content.
Furthermore, a 2022 blog post containing an interview with the company’s Vice President of DEI has also been taken down.
Reasons for Removal Remain Unclear
The motivation behind these removals is currently unknown. It is uncertain whether this represents a change in the company’s stated values or simply a modification of its public-facing messaging.
UnitedHealth’s Official Statement
In response to inquiries from TechCrunch, UnitedHealth spokesperson Tyler Mason stated: “We comply with existing and emerging laws while striving to support what is best for the communities we serve.” He further emphasized that the company’s commitment to a respectful and collaborative work environment, and its dedication to expanding healthcare access, remain central to its culture.
Broader Trend of DEI Policy Adjustments
This action by UnitedHealth aligns with a wider trend of companies, including prominent tech firms, scaling back their DEI programs and policies. This shift is occurring amidst increasing scrutiny and pressure stemming from executive orders issued during the Trump administration targeting DEI initiatives.
Legal Challenges and Government Scrutiny
In February, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi directed the Justice Department to “investigate, eliminate, and penalize” DEI programs deemed unlawful within private companies receiving federal funds. A federal appeals court has temporarily permitted the advancement of these efforts, despite a prior lower court ruling against the government’s actions.
Other Companies Taking Similar Steps
Several technology companies, such as Google and OpenAI, have already begun removing DEI-related references from their websites.
Real-Time Monitoring of Website Changes
TechCrunch observed the removal of DEI-related pages on UnitedHealth’s website throughout Wednesday morning. The publication utilizes a web page monitoring tool, initially implemented to track updates to the company’s data breach notification following last year’s ransomware attack on Change Healthcare.
Introduction of “Culture of Belonging”
In place of the explicit “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” section in the website menu, UnitedHealth has introduced a new page titled “Culture of Belonging.” This revised page employs less specific language and omits previous details regarding the company’s diversity initiatives on university campuses, diverse recruitment practices, and employee resource groups.
