Linearity Secures $20 Million to Expand its Vector Design Platform

A familiar narrative within the technology sector unfolded for Linearity: a solution initially developed to address an internal need ultimately proved to be more valuable than the originating company itself. This scenario played out with the creation of Vectornator by Vladimir Danila, the company’s 17-year-old founder, in 2017.

Vectornator, designed to simplify vector design, has since gained significant traction. It is currently utilized by industry giants such as Apple, Disney, Wacom, and Microsoft.

Notable Client Usage

Notably, Disney leverages Vectornator in the creation of artwork specifically for its Disneyland hotel properties.

Funding Details

Linearity has recently completed a $20 million funding round. This round was spearheaded by EQT Ventures, with participation from 468 Capital.

A group of prominent angel investors also contributed, including Bradley Horowitz (VP Product, Google), Jonathan Rochelle (co-founder of Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive), Charles Songhurst (Ex. Corporate Strategy, Microsoft), and Lutz Finger (Group Product Manager, Google).

Future Plans

The newly acquired funding will be strategically allocated to enhance the company’s mobile-first product, Vectornator. Key areas of development include the integration of AI-powered automation and collaborative functionalities.

Furthermore, Linearity intends to introduce new products and broaden its market presence across the U.S., Europe, and Asia.

Founder's Vision

Vladimir Danila, CEO and founder of Linearity, stated: “My initial experience with design tools at the age of 10 revealed their complexity and intimidating nature. This prompted me to envision and build my own suite of tools.

I recognized the increasing importance of vectors over pixels, acknowledging their superiority in all areas except photography. Vectornator prioritizes user experience, simplicity, and avoids unnecessary software complexity.”

He further added, “I am excited to collaborate with Ted and his team, benefiting from their expertise and market insights to facilitate the growth of our platform.”

Investor Perspective

Ted Persson, partner at EQT Ventures, shared: “The decision to partner with the Linearity team was driven by two compelling factors. Vladimir is a remarkably focused founder who has developed an exceptional product.

Building design tools is inherently challenging, yet Vladimir and his team have demonstrated that success is achievable.”

Growing Interest in Design Tools

Investment activity within the design tool sector has surged following the remarkable success of Canva, currently valued at $15 billion.
