Venmo and PayPal Users Can Now Send Money to Each Other

Venmo and PayPal to Achieve Interoperability
For a considerable period, Venmo and PayPal, both widely utilized applications for digital money transfers to contacts and merchants, have operated as separate entities. However, Venmo has announced a forthcoming change scheduled for November.
According to a communication from Venmo to its customer base, users of both platforms will soon be capable of making payments to one another both domestically within the U.S. and internationally.
Bridging the Gap Between Platforms
Specifically, PayPal users will gain the ability to locate and remit funds to Venmo users utilizing their registered phone numbers. Subsequently, email addresses will also be supported for this purpose.
Previously, transferring funds between these services necessitated complex and indirect methods. This presented a significant inconvenience for many, particularly given PayPal's ownership of Venmo, fostering an expectation that such functionality would be readily available.
It's plausible that integrating the two services more fully might have reduced the incentive for users to maintain accounts on both platforms, potentially explaining the delay in implementing this feature.
User Privacy Considerations
With this update, PayPal users will be able to identify Venmo users by entering their phone number, and later, their email address. Users concerned about visibility can adjust their privacy settings within the Venmo application.
Navigate to Settings > Privacy > Find me… to control discoverability. Additionally, consider setting your Venmo transactions to private by default through Settings > Privacy for enhanced control.
Expanding the PayPal Network
PayPal initially revealed plans in July to expand its network of payment systems, beginning with Venmo. The official launch date was only recently confirmed.
This broader initiative, branded as PayPal World, will also incorporate Mercado Pago, NPCI International Payments Limited, and Tenpay Global.
Global Reach and User Base
The aim is to facilitate seamless international money transfers, minimizing both obstacles and associated fees.
PayPal reports a combined user base of 2 billion individuals globally across both Venmo and PayPal platforms.
- Venmo and PayPal will allow cross-platform payments.
- Users can be found via phone number and email.
- Privacy settings allow users to control discoverability.
- PayPal World expands the network to include other payment systems.
