InFarm Raises $200M to Expand Vertical Farming Globally

Infarm Secures $200 Million in Series D Funding
Infarm, a European company specializing in vertical farming, has announced a $200 million Series D funding round. This investment follows a $170 million raise completed last year.
The recent funding brings the company’s total raised capital to over $600 million. This achievement positions Infarm as Europe’s first vertical farming unicorn, with a valuation exceeding $1 billion.
Expansion and Future Goals
“Our core mission centers around establishing a worldwide network of climate-resilient vertical farms,” stated Erez Galonska, co-founder and CEO of Infarm. “This latest funding will accelerate our global expansion and strengthen our research and development efforts.”
The company intends to broaden its reach across Europe, Asia, North America, and the Middle East. The goal is to cultivate a wider variety of crops closer to consumers.
Infarm aspires to eventually grow a complete range of fruits and vegetables, offering high-quality products at accessible prices.
International Growth Strategy
A significant portion of the new funding will be allocated to Infarm’s international expansion initiatives. Key target markets include the U.S., Canada, Japan, and additional European countries.
Further expansion is planned into more Asia-Pacific regions and the Middle East, demonstrating a broad global outlook.
Qatar Investment and a New Grow Center
The Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) led this funding round, marking a significant development for Infarm.
As part of the agreement, plans are underway to establish a new grow center in Qatar. This facility will focus on cultivating tomatoes, strawberries, and other fruits within the region.
Many vertical farming companies are increasingly focusing on fruit production. This shift is driven by the relative ease of growing fruits in controlled indoor environments, moving beyond traditional leafy greens and herbs.
QIA’s Perspective on Food Security
Mansoor bin Ebrahim Al-Mahmoud of QIA commented, “As a long-term investor, QIA aims to create value for future generations.”
“We believe vertical farming offers a pathway to enhance food security globally. We are excited to collaborate with Infarm on developing the first Growing Centre in Qatar.”
This project will contribute to Qatar’s food security initiatives and support economic diversification.
The Benefits of Vertical Farming in Arid Regions
Vertical farming is particularly well-suited for regions like the Middle East. It allows for crop production in climate-controlled facilities, significantly reducing water consumption compared to conventional farming methods.
In 2018, Crop One announced plans for a 130,000-square-foot vertical farming facility in the UAE, highlighting the growing interest in this technology.
The need for sustainable food production solutions will continue to drive the adoption of vertical farming practices worldwide.
