Boston Dynamics delivered an unexpected holiday treat this week. Their electric Atlas robot, outfitted in a Santa suit, successfully executed a backflip.
This impressive maneuver can be observed approximately 13 minutes into a recently released video. The demonstration highlights another addition to the humanoid robot’s growing repertoire of capabilities.
Backflips and Robotic Complexity
Interestingly, for a robot, performing a backflip doesn't inherently present a greater challenge than simply walking. However, the priority for roboticists generally lies in developing practical skills like efficient movement.
Despite this, the robustness of Boston Dynamics’ latest Atlas model is remarkable. Notably, the robot maintained its Santa hat throughout the entire backflip.
Building on Previous Achievements
The electric Atlas is continuing the legacy established by its hydraulically powered predecessor. That earlier version first showcased the backflip skill back in 2017.
