WeTransfer Free Plan Now Limited to 10 Transfers Monthly

WeTransfer Implements Transfer Limits for Free Users
WeTransfer, a popular file transfer service, has introduced a limitation of 10 transfers per month for users utilizing its free plan. This new restriction is currently being implemented for all free users, as detailed on the platform’s support documentation.
Enhanced Features for Free Plan Users
Alongside the transfer limit, WeTransfer is simultaneously enhancing its free plan offerings. The maximum file size for each transfer has been increased from 2GB to 3GB.
Additional benefits include unlimited access to portals – collaborative folders designed for client work – and the inclusion of file transfer reviews.
Password protection is now available for all transfers, adding an extra layer of security for sensitive files.
Changes to Paid Transfer Fees
The company has also discontinued a 5% fee previously applied to paid transfers. This program had allowed users to monetize file sharing through the platform.
Revised Pricing Structure
Following its acquisition by Italy-based Bending Spoons in July, WeTransfer is undergoing a restructuring of its pricing model.
A new WeTransfer Starter plan has been introduced, priced at $6.99 per month. This plan mirrors the benefits of the free plan but expands the storage capacity to 300GB.
Consolidation of Premium Plans
Previously, WeTransfer offered Pro and Premium plans at $15 and $25 per month, respectively. These have been consolidated into a single Ultimate plan, now available for $25 per month, encompassing all available features.
Following a Pattern of Change
Prior to the acquisition, speculation arose regarding potential staff reductions or pricing adjustments at WeTransfer. These predictions have proven accurate.
In September, Bending Spoons announced a reduction in WeTransfer’s workforce, impacting 75% of its employees. The current pricing changes represent a further shift in the company’s strategy.
Similar Actions After Evernote Acquisition
Bending Spoons employed a comparable strategy after acquiring Evernote in 2022. Initially, they reduced the number of employees at Evernote.
Subsequently, limitations were placed on the features available within the note-taking app’s free plan.
In August, the company also modified the file expiry policies, basing them on the user’s subscription level.
