You.com Raises $20M Seed Funding to Reinvent Search

A New Approach to Search: You.com Launches Public Beta with $20 Million in Funding

Richard Socher, previously the chief scientist at Salesforce, alongside his co-founders at You.com, have dedicated the past year to developing a novel search engine. Today marks a significant milestone with the release of a public beta version and the announcement of a substantial $20 million seed investment.

Reimagining the Search Results Page

Unlike conventional search engines that present results in a continuous vertical scroll, You.com adopts a distinctly different approach. Socher and his team deliberately sought to challenge existing norms and innovate within the search landscape.

“The design process involved numerous iterations, and we consciously adopted a beginner’s perspective to truly revolutionize search,” Socher explained. “The traditional vertical list format has become increasingly cluttered with elements like advertisements and has remained largely unchanged for two decades.”

Customizable and App-Integrated Results

The core innovation lies in the integration of various applications directly into the search results page, including platforms like Medium, Yelp, and Reddit. Users possess the ability to prioritize these applications or exclude them entirely, tailoring the search experience to their preferences.

Results are categorized by application, alongside a standard web results section. Navigation is achieved through horizontal scrolling, allowing users to quickly view results within a specific app or category. Furthermore, previews of content, such as videos or code snippets, are displayed directly within the results, eliminating the need to open new tabs and reducing digital clutter.

Personalized Search Experience

You.com learns from user interactions. If a particular set of results is favored, users can elevate their position, and the search engine will retain this preference for future searches, delivering more relevant results over time.

The name "You.com" reflects the company’s commitment to user control. As Socher stated, “We remain true to our name; it’s centered around you. Users can actively choose the sources they want to see more or less of.”

The search engine intelligently adapts to the query. For instance, when searching for a local Thai restaurant, Yelp results will be prioritized. Should Yelp results be undesirable, the system can default to standard web results, providing users with a high degree of flexibility.

Maintaining a Balanced Perspective

While extensive customization is offered, You.com ensures a balanced perspective. Sources that are de-emphasized do not disappear entirely; they are simply positioned lower in the results list. Users who prefer a more conventional search experience can allow the engine to display results automatically.

Targeting Developers and Privacy-Conscious Users

Initially, the focus is on serving developers and users who prioritize privacy. Early testing revealed that linking to retailer catalogs was often misinterpreted as advertising, leading the team to explore alternative use cases.

Developers can efficiently search for and locate code snippets, scrolling horizontally through options, copying, and pasting with increased speed compared to traditional search engines, including privacy-focused alternatives like DuckDuckGo.

Enhanced Privacy Features

For users concerned about privacy, You.com offers a dedicated "Incognito mode" that conceals all identifying information, including the user’s IP address. The engine facilitates seamless transitions between privacy modes, allowing users to enable location services when needed and quickly restore privacy afterward.

Monetization Strategy

The company is committed to protecting user data and pledges not to sell it to third parties. Currently, the primary focus is on refining the design and expanding the user base, with monetization strategies to be addressed later.

While advertising is anticipated, it will be implemented in a manner that respects user privacy, avoiding the direct linking of queries to individual user data and minimizing clutter within the results.

For example, a search for "air purifier" might display a relevant advertisement, but the advertiser will not gain access to personal user information, a common practice with current online advertising models.

Investment and Availability

The $20 million Seed investment was led by Time Ventures, the private venture fund of Marc Benioff, Socher’s former employer, with participation from Breyer Capital, Sound Ventures, Day One Ventures, and numerous industry experts.

After a period of private beta testing with a limited number of users, You.com is now available to the public. A Chrome extension is available for download to facilitate access.
