YouTube TV App Updates: QR Codes & AI Upscaling

YouTube Enhances TV App with New Features
On Wednesday, YouTube unveiled a series of updates designed to refine the user interface for its television application.
These key improvements encompass the integration of QR codes for streamlined product identification and purchasing within videos, the implementation of AI-driven upscaling technology, and enhancements to the search functionality.
Strengthening Position in the Living Room
These updates arrive as YouTube concentrates on reinforcing its standing as a dominant force in the living room entertainment landscape.
Recent data from Nielsen, published in April, indicates that YouTube commands 12.4% of total television viewing time, surpassing established media companies such as Disney, Paramount, and Netflix.
QR Codes for Seamless Shopping
Expanding its commerce capabilities, YouTube now supports QR codes embedded within videos.
Content creators can now link specific products directly to their videos, allowing viewers to scan these codes with their mobile devices for instant access to product pages.
This functionality is projected to generate increased revenue, particularly within the realm of shopping-focused content, which has already garnered substantial viewership – totaling 35 billion hours in the past year, according to YouTube’s reports.
Furthermore, the number of channels achieving six-figure revenue streams through television screens has risen by over 45% in the last twelve months.
While shoppable QR codes aren’t entirely novel – having been adopted by platforms like Roku and Peacock – YouTube asserts that its implementation is geared towards empowering creators to more effectively market and sell their merchandise by connecting directly to their online stores.
The platform is also initiating tests to display products at precise, timed intervals within video content.
Enhanced Video Quality and AI Upscaling
Further improvements are focused on optimizing the overall television viewing experience.
YouTube is increasing the thumbnail file size limit from 2MB to 50MB, enabling support for 4K-resolution thumbnails.
Experiments are also underway to accommodate larger video uploads with select creators, facilitating the delivery of higher-quality video content.
An AI-powered feature is being introduced to automatically upscale videos originally uploaded in lower resolutions to full HD.
Future plans include extending this upscaling capability to 4K resolution.
YouTube emphasizes that creators will retain complete control over their content and preserve original files, while viewers will still have the option to view videos in their original resolution.
This initiative aims to align YouTube’s TV viewing experience with its competitors, though the ultimate effectiveness of the technology remains to be evaluated.
Netflix previously faced criticism for utilizing AI to upscale older series, such as “A Different World,” encountering issues that resulted in visual distortions and generally unsatisfactory outcomes.
Improved Content Discovery and Navigation
Additional new features include immersive previews designed to facilitate effortless video browsing.
Contextual search functionality is also being implemented to enhance content discovery.
When viewers initiate a search directly from a creator’s channel page, the platform will prioritize videos from that specific channel in the search results, rather than displaying results from across the entire YouTube platform.
