YouTube Pays Music Industry $8 Billion | Revenue Sharing

YouTube's Financial Contribution to the Music Industry

A recent announcement from YouTube reveals that over $8 billion was distributed to the music industry during the period spanning from July 2024 to July 2025.

Lyor Cohen, YouTube’s Global Head of Music, stated that this substantial payout demonstrates the effectiveness of their combined advertising and subscription revenue streams.

A Milestone Achievement

Cohen initially revealed this significant figure during a presentation at Billboard Latin Music Week on Wednesday.

This represents a new high for the platform, with YouTube’s yearly payments to the music sector increasing by $2 billion since 2022.

In 2022, the company reported a contribution of $6 billion to the music industry for the period between July 2021 and June 2022. Prior to that, in 2021, payouts totaled $4 billion over a 12-month span.

Comparison with Spotify

This announcement follows Spotify’s earlier report of disbursing $10 billion to the music industry in 2024, an increase from the $9 billion paid out in 2023.

It is important to recognize that these funds are not solely received by artists; a portion also goes to record labels, publishers, songwriters, and other industry stakeholders.

Growth in Subscribers and Viewership

YouTube attributes its success to its dual revenue model, supported by a growing subscriber base.

Currently, the platform boasts over 125 million subscribers to both Music and Premium services worldwide, including those participating in trials.

Furthermore, YouTube reports that two billion logged-in users view music videos on the platform each month.

Expanding Global Reach

The company emphasizes that as its global presence expands, opportunities for artists and songwriters to establish sustainable careers and cultivate a dedicated fanbase on YouTube will also increase.

YouTube is currently accessible in over 100 countries and offers support for 80 different languages.

Broader Creator Support

During its Made on YouTube event last month, the company announced that it has distributed more than $100 billion to creators, artists, and media companies within the last four years.
