Zoom End-to-End Encryption: Now Free - But There's a Catch

Zoom, the video communication platform widely adopted during recent years, has now made end-to-end encrypted video conferencing available to users with free accounts.

The organization announced last week its preparation for this release, following earlier scrutiny regarding its decision to limit end-to-end encryption to paying subscribers. This previously created a distinction in privacy levels between paid accounts – where conversations were inaccessible to Zoom – and free accounts, which had less secure communications.

Zoom stated that this new end-to-end encryption capability, significantly increasing the difficulty for unauthorized access to conversations – even by Zoom itself – will be initially released as a technical preview within Zoom versions 5.4.0 for both desktop and mobile platforms.

The acquisition of Keybase in May was partially motivated by the desire to integrate its encryption technologies into Zoom’s call functionality.

However, there are several limitations to consider.

Due to the requirement that end-to-end encryption be activated for all participants on a call, certain functionalities will be unavailable. Features such as Zoom’s cloud recording, real-time transcription, and in-meeting reactions will be inaccessible during encrypted calls. Additionally, joining via telephone and utilizing one-on-one private chat will not be possible. Furthermore, all participants must utilize a Zoom application that supports end-to-end encryption; the browser-based version is not compatible.

Any free account wishing to utilize end-to-end encryption will be required to confirm a phone number and provide billing details – a measure Zoom explains is necessary to deter misuse of the system.

Jason Lee, Zoom’s chief information security officer, expressed that end-to-end encryption was a “much-requested feature from our user base, and we are pleased to deliver on this.” The implementation, while delayed, is a positive development.
